About sterling silver
Sterling silver is 92.5 % silver and 7.5 % copper, hallmarked 925 or "sterling". It is the world standard for silver jewellery, cutlery and hollowware because pure silver is too soft to hold a shape.
Common Swedish hallmarks
Older Swedish silver is often 830 rather than 925, and carries the three crowns mark with a year letter. Both are real silver — only the content differs, and the value follows the content.
Watch out for plating
"EPNS", "nickel silver", "alpacca" and "silver plated" contain no silver worth selling. Real silver is always stamped with a number such as 925, 830 or 800.
Weighted items
Candlesticks and knife handles are often filled with pitch, plaster or cement. Only the silver shell counts, which is why a heavy candlestick can be worth far less than its weight suggests.

Frequently asked questions
What is 925 silver worth per gram today?
One gram of 925 sterling silver is worth 19.39 SEK in metal value, based on a fine silver price of 20.94 SEK per gram.
What do I get paid for silver jewellery?
Buyers normally pay 60–80 % of the metal value for scrap silver. Hallmarked designer pieces can be worth considerably more sold second-hand than melted.
Is 925 silver real silver?
Yes, 92.5 % silver. The copper addition makes it hard enough for everyday use and does not affect it being genuine silver.
Why does 925 silver tarnish?
The copper reacts with sulphur in the air. Polish with a silver cloth and store in a sealed bag to slow it down.
