About palladium
Palladium is the most industrial of the precious metals: around 85 % goes into catalytic converters for petrol cars. That makes the price unusually volatile — it more than quadrupled between 2016 and 2022 and then fell back sharply.
In jewellery
Palladium is used in white gold alloys and occasionally in rings hallmarked 950 Pd. It is lighter than platinum and does not need rhodium plating to stay white.
Supply risk
Russia and South Africa account for the bulk of mine supply, so the price reacts strongly to sanctions, strikes and power cuts. Electric cars need no catalyst, which is the long-term headwind for demand.
