About 14k gold
14k gold, hallmarked 585, is by far the most common purity in Swedish jewellery — chains, bracelets, earrings and rings. 58.5 % of the weight is pure gold; the rest is copper and silver for strength and colour.
What 585 is worth
The gram value is always 58.5 % of the spot price of pure gold. If a chain weighs 12 grams, multiply 12 by the gram value in the table above to get the melt value.
Older hallmarks
Swedish pieces from before 1912 may be stamped 14K or carry the cat's paw control mark with a year letter. If there is no readable hallmark, the buyer tests the fineness with acid or an XRF scanner before quoting.
How the 14k gold price is calculated
Gold is traded internationally in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 g). We take the live spot price, convert it to Swedish kronor at today's USD/SEK rate (9.74) and divide by 31.1035. That gives the price of pure gold, today 1,272.27 SEK per gram. Because 14k gold contains 58.5 % gold, its value is that figure × 585/1000 = 745.02 SEK per gram, or about $76.53.
Worked examples with today's price
A 5 g 14k ring contains 2.92 g of fine gold and is worth 3,725 SEK. A 15 g chain is worth 11,175 SEK, and a heavy 25 g bracelet 18,626 SEK. If a buyer offers 75 % of spot you would receive about 8,382 SEK for the chain.
For comparison, 10k (417) gold is worth 531.07 SEK per gram, so the same 15 g piece in 10k would be worth 7,966 SEK — the hallmark matters as much as the weight.
Tips before you sell 14k gold
Weigh each piece on a kitchen scale with two decimals and subtract stones, steel springs and other non-gold parts. Keep 585 pieces separate from other purities, otherwise a buyer may pay the lowest purity for everything. Ask whether the quote is per gram of total weight or of fine gold, and whether testing or postage fees are deducted. Get at least three quotes — the difference between pawnshops, jewellers and mail-in refiners is often 20–30 %. Designer pieces and jewellery with certified stones are often worth more sold whole than melted.
