How the gold price works
Gold trades around the clock on the world market in US dollars per troy ounce. To show the gold price today in Swedish kronor we convert the spot price with the current dollar rate and divide by 31.1035 grams, which gives the price per gram of pure gold (999).
Two things drive the price in kronor
The dollar price of gold, and the USD/SEK exchange rate. A weaker krona pushes the gold price in kronor higher even when the dollar price stands still — which is why Swedish gold prices often move more than the dollar headlines suggest.
Spot price is not shop price
The spot price is the reference price for unworked gold in large volumes. Buying bars or coins you pay a premium of a few percent; selling jewellery you take a discount. Expect 60–85 % of spot value when selling scrap gold.
Purity decides the value of jewellery
A piece hallmarked 585 contains 58.5 % pure gold, 750 contains 75 % and 999 is pure gold. Multiply the spot price per gram by the fineness divided by 1000 to get the gram value — the calculator above does it for you.
