Choosing a bar size

The premium over spot falls sharply with size. A 1 gram bar can cost 15–25 % above gold value, a 100 gram bar 2–4 % and a kilo bar 1–2 %. Buying small bars is convenient but expensive per gram.

Cast or minted

Minted bars come sealed in a certified blister pack with a serial number and are easiest to resell. Cast bars are cheaper per gram and common in larger sizes.

Keep the packaging

Never break the seal on a certified bar. An opened blister pack has to be re-tested and usually fetches a lower price.

Recognised brands

Stick to LBMA Good Delivery refiners — Valcambi, PAMP, Argor-Heraeus, Heraeus, Umicore, Perth Mint. Unbranded bars are harder to sell and are often discounted.

VAT free — but not tax free

Investment gold of at least 995 fineness is VAT-exempt in the EU. Capital gains may still be taxable when you sell, so keep your purchase receipts.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 100 gram gold bar cost today?

The gold value is 138,368 SEK. Expect to pay 2–4 % above that when buying from a dealer.

Which bar size is cheapest per gram?

The larger the bar, the lower the premium. A kilo bar costs 1–2 % over spot, while 1 gram bars can cost 15–25 % over.

Should I buy bars or coins?

Bars are cheaper per gram; coins are easier to sell in small amounts and have a broader private market. Many investors hold both.

How do I check that a bar is genuine?

Keep it sealed with its certificate, buy from an established dealer, and verify weight and dimensions. Ultrasound or XRF testing is available at most dealers.
