The gold/silver ratio
The ratio has averaged 60–70 over the past century. A high ratio is often read as silver being cheap relative to gold, a low ratio the opposite.
About the silver price
Silver is both a precious metal and an industrial metal — solar panels, electronics and brazing alloys consume more than half of annual supply. That makes the silver price swing far more than gold: moves of 3–5 % in a day are normal.
VAT matters in Sweden
Investment gold is VAT-exempt in the EU, but silver is not: 25 % VAT is added on Swedish purchases of silver bars and most coins. You therefore need a considerably higher silver price to break even than the spot price suggests.
Selling silver cutlery and objects
Swedish cutlery, bowls and candlesticks are usually 830 or 925 silver, but weighted candlesticks and knife handles are filled with pitch or plaster — only the silver weight counts. Buyers pay 60–80 % of the metal value.

Frequently asked questions
What does a gram of silver cost today?
One gram of fine silver (999) costs 20.94 SEK, and one kilo 20,938 SEK.
What is 925 silver worth?
925 sterling silver contains 92.5 % silver, so one gram is worth 19.39 SEK in metal value.
Why is silver more volatile than gold?
The market is smaller and roughly half of demand is industrial, so silver reacts both to investment flows and to the business cycle.
Do I pay VAT on silver?
Yes. Unlike investment gold, silver carries 25 % Swedish VAT on purchase, which you do not get back when you sell.
