Spot price vs dealer price

Spot 1,383.68 SEK/g pure gold · 20 September 2026

The price you see in the news is the spot price — pure gold traded in large lots on the world market. What you receive for a ring is something else. Here is exactly how wide that gap is, buyer by buyer, in Swedish kronor.

Calculate your own gold

Spot price is the world market price of pure gold. No buyer pays 100 % of it — the gap is their margin, refining cost and risk. Here is how much it differs:

How to negotiate a better offer

Arrive with numbers, not a bag

Weigh the gold at home on a decimal scale, sort it by hallmark (375, 585, 750, 916, 999) and write down the spot value of each group. A seller who can say this is 18.4 grams of 585, spot value 14,907 SEK almost always gets a better offer than one who asks “what is it worth?”.

Ask for the offer as a percentage of spot

Ask directly: what percentage of spot do you pay? That makes offers from different shops comparable even when gold moves between visits. Below 60 % is low, 70–80 % is normal, above 85 % is very good for scrap.

Split the lot

Signed jewellery, gold coins and antiques usually do better at auction, while broken chains and single earrings belong with the scrap buyer. Selling everything by weight in one go is the most common way to lose money.

Never sell in a hurry

Buyers know that someone who must sell today accepts the first offer. If you have time, collect three offers over a week — the spread on the same pile is often 20–30 %.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't I get the spot price for my gold?

Spot applies to pure gold in large lots traded between banks and refineries. Your jewellery has to be weighed, assayed, refined and shipped, and the buyer carries price risk meanwhile. Offers therefore land at 60–88 % of spot.

Who pays the most for gold in Sweden?

Specialist gold buyers and auction houses pay most, local goldsmiths and pawn shops sit in the middle, mail-in services pay least. For signed jewellery and coins, auction almost always beats scrap value.

Can I sell at spot price?

In practice only if you sell investment gold — bars and coins with certificates — back to a dealer at a small spread, or privately to another investor.

Should I ask for an offer per piece or for the whole lot?

Ask per purity group. A lump-sum offer for the whole pile is nearly always calculated on the lowest purity present.

How often do dealer prices change?

Most update daily after the London fix and the USD/SEK rate, so an offer rarely holds for more than 24 hours.
