About platinum
Platinum is rarer than gold — annual mine production is around one twentieth of gold's — but the price is usually lower, because demand depends heavily on the car industry's need for catalytic converters.
Platinum jewellery is 950
Rings are normally hallmarked 950 (95 % platinum) or Plat/Pt950. Platinum is denser than gold, so an identical ring weighs more — and the metal value can therefore exceed that of an 18k gold ring.
Platinum versus gold
Platinum traded above gold for most of the period 1990–2011. Since then the relationship has reversed: today gold costs about 2.4× as much per gram as platinum.
Selling platinum
Fewer buyers handle platinum than gold, and margins are wider. Ask specifically whether the buyer refines platinum, or the quote will be well below metal value.
