How scrap gold is valued
Scrap gold is any gold that will be melted rather than resold as jewellery: broken chains, single earrings, old wedding bands, dental gold and outdated designs. Its value depends on only two things — the weight of fine gold it contains and today's spot price. Design, brand and condition play no role once the piece goes into the crucible.
The formula
Value = weight in grams × purity ÷ 1000 × spot price per gram of pure gold. With today's spot price of 1,239.50 SEK per gram, a 20 g bag of 14k (585) jewellery contains 11.7 g of fine gold worth 14,517 SEK. The same 20 g in 18k (750) is worth 18,611 SEK, and in 9k (375) only 9,306 SEK.
What the buyer keeps
No buyer pays the full spot value. They must test the metal, melt and refine it, carry the price risk and run a business. At 80 % of spot the 20 g of 14k above pays 11,613 SEK; at 60 % only 8,710 SEK. That difference of 2,903 SEK is why comparing quotes is the single most valuable thing you can do.
Five practical tips
1) Sort pieces by hallmark before you go. 2) Weigh each group at home on a scale with two decimals. 3) Remove stones and steel parts. 4) Ask whether the price is per gram of fine gold or of total weight. 5) Get at least three quotes, including one from a mail-in refiner. Pieces from known designers or with certified diamonds may be worth more sold whole — the scrap value is the floor, not the ceiling.

Typical deductions in Sweden are 15–40 % of the spot value. Refiners with high volume usually pay 85–90 %, pawnshops and shopping-centre buyers often 60–70 %.
Should I weigh broken jewellery?
Yes. Scrap gold is paid by weight and purity, so broken chains, single earrings and bent rings are worth exactly as much per gram as intact pieces.
Do stones count in the weight?
No. Remove or subtract stones, pearls, enamel and steel parts. A buyer will deduct them anyway, and leaving them in makes your estimate too high.
