About the Krugerrand
- The most traded one-ounce gold coin in the world.
- 22 karat (916.7) with a copper alloy that gives the coin its reddish tone.
- Also minted in 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 ounce sizes.
The Krugerrand was the first modern bullion coin and is still the easiest gold coin to sell anywhere in Europe. Every Swedish dealer knows it, which keeps spreads tight.
Because the coin is 22 karat it weighs 33.93 grams in total, yet it contains exactly one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of pure gold. Only the fine gold content decides the value.
Ordinary years carry no collector premium, so buy the cheapest coin your dealer has. Proof issues and the 1967 first year are the exceptions.
Premium is the only thing you negotiate
The gold content is fixed, so the price of a Krugerrand is the gold value plus a premium. Today the gold in the coin is worth 43,037 SEK; a dealer typically asks 3–6 % over spot and pays spot to spot +2 % when buying it back.
VAT and investment gold
Bullion coins minted after 1800, at least 900 fine and traded near their gold value are classed as investment gold and are exempt from VAT throughout the EU, including Sweden.
