How to get the best price
1. Know the gold value before you go
Weigh everything and calculate the spot value with the calculator above. A buyer who offers 40 % of that is not competitive, no matter how the offer is presented.
2. Get three quotes
Payouts for the same chain routinely differ by 30 % between a high-street pawnshop, a local jeweller and a mail-in refiner. Quotes are free and take minutes.
3. Sort by hallmark
Never let 750 be weighed together with 375 — you will be paid for the lower purity. Separate the pieces into groups yourself before handing them over.
4. Watch the deductions
Ask whether the quote is per gram of gold content or per gram of total weight, and whether testing, postage or insurance is charged. The gram price means nothing until you know what is subtracted.
5. Consider selling as jewellery instead
Hallmarked and designer pieces, and anything with certified diamonds, are usually worth far more second-hand than melted. Scrap value is the floor, not the ceiling.

Why doesn't anyone pay the spot price?
The buyer has to test the fineness, melt and refine the metal, and carry the price risk until it is sold. The spread is their revenue.
Do broken pieces sell for less?
No. Scrap gold is paid by weight and purity, so broken chains and single earrings are worth exactly the same per gram as intact pieces.
Do I have to pay tax on gold I sell?
Selling personal items at a profit can be taxable in Sweden above certain limits. Most jewellery is sold at or below its purchase price, but check your own situation with Skatteverket.
